A chainsaw attachment for an angle grinder mounts a guide bar and chain on your grinder so it can cut branches and small logs. At Punjab Tools there are two 12-inch grinder kits: the Chain Saw Bracket Attachment Kit at Rs 3,000, which fits 4-inch and 5-inch grinders with M10 or M14 spindles, and the Chain Saw Stand Attachment at Rs 3,800, which fits 4-inch M10 grinders. There is also a 4-inch chainsaw carving disc at Rs 1,200 and a drill-to-mini-chainsaw adapter at Rs 2,200.

These kits are for occasional pruning and light wood cutting near a socket, not for felling trees. This guide covers fitment, setup and safety for these kits only. For every other grinder converter, see our angle grinder attachments guide. Prices are Punjab Tools prices, October 2026. Check the product page for today's price.

The bracket kit (Rs 3,000) is the more flexible of the two grinder kits. It has a die-cast aluminium bracket that clamps on the grinder's gear neck, a sprocket adapter for M10 or M14 threads, a front guard baffle, an auxiliary top handle and a side screw for chain tension.

The stand attachment (Rs 3,800) is for 4-inch M10 grinders only. It comes with a spring steel bar, a high-carbon steel chain, a handle, a protective baffle, an installation kit and an oil bottle that arrives empty.

Which grinders fit which kit

Check two things on your grinder before ordering: the spindle thread (M10 on most 4-inch grinders, M14 on most 5-inch) and the neck collar diameter, the round part of the gearbox that the disc guard clamps onto. The bracket kit lists a 42–43mm collar. Measure yours with a vernier or a tape wrapped around the neck if you are unsure.

How to set up a grinder chain saw kit

Each kit comes with its own hardware, so follow the instructions in the box. The order of work is the same for both.

  1. Unplug the grinder. Do not rely on the switch being off.
  2. Remove the disc and flange nut. The kit's drive sprocket locks onto the spindle thread in their place. The bracket kit lists both M10 and M14; the stand attachment lists M10 only.
  3. Mount the bracket on the neck. It clamps where the disc guard normally sits. If your guard has to come off to make room, keep it safe and refit it the moment you go back to discs.
  4. Fit the bar and chain. Check the chain direction against the kit's instructions before tightening. A chain fitted backwards will not cut and will overheat.
  5. Set the tension. The chain should sit snug along the bottom of the bar with no sag, but you should still be able to pull it round by hand with gloves on and the grinder unplugged. A loose chain can jump off the bar; an over-tight one overheats.
  6. Fit the handle and baffle. The auxiliary handle is not optional. It is how you hold the tool with two hands.
  7. Fill the oil reservoir with chain and bar oil. The stand attachment's oil bottle arrives empty. Do not run a dry chain, not even for one cut.
  8. Test before cutting. Plug in, hold the tool with both hands, run it for a few seconds with nothing in front of it, and check that oil is reaching the chain.

After the first few cuts, unplug and check the tension again. New chains stretch, and a chain that was right at the start can be loose after ten minutes.

Safety rules for grinder chainsaw attachments

This is the section to read twice. A grinder was designed to spin a disc, not to drive a chain, and neither grinder kit lists a chain brake. A dedicated chainsaw has features these kits do not, so the rules below are not optional.

  1. Two hands, every cut. One hand on the grinder body, one on the kit's handle. Never lock the grinder's switch on.
  2. Keep the guard baffle fitted. It is there to stop chips and stray contact.
  3. Small branches and pruning only. Stick to branches and small logs well inside the bar length. Big trunks, felling and storm-damaged trees under tension are jobs for an experienced person with a proper chainsaw.
  4. Nothing above shoulder height. Never cut from a ladder, a wall or up in the tree. If you cannot reach it standing on the ground, leave it.
  5. Support the work. Cut logs on a sawhorse or blocks so the cut opens as you go. If the wood closes on the bar, stop, unplug and wedge the cut open.
  6. Stand to the side of the cutting line, with firm footing and a clear area. Keep children, helpers and animals well back.
  7. Mind the cable. Keep the cord behind you and away from the chain. Use a grounded socket, and do not work in rain or on wet grass.
  8. Wear the right gear: safety glasses or a face shield, ear protection, thick gloves, closed shoes and long trousers. Tie back or remove anything loose, such as a chadar, dupatta or loose kameez sleeves, that a moving chain could catch.
  9. Unplug before every adjustment, including tension checks, oil top-ups and clearing jams.

The 4-inch chainsaw carving disc

The carving disc is a 100mm disc with a 22-tooth chain around a 5mm steel core and a 16mm arbor. It is listed for 4-inch and 4.5-inch grinders at 10,000 to 13,000 RPM, so our 4-inch corded grinders, both listed at 11,000 RPM, sit within that range. The chain can be resharpened with a standard chain file, as listed.

Use it for carving: hollowing bowls, notching timber, shaping and removing bark. The listing also mentions trimming small branches, but our advice is to keep the disc for work clamped at bench height. A spinning chain disc held out at arm's length towards a branch is exactly the kind of cut that goes wrong. Keep the grinder's guard on, use the side handle, and clamp the work every time.

The drill-to-mini-chainsaw adapter

The drill adapter fits any drill chuck by its hex shank and runs a short 4-inch or 6-inch bar, with an auxiliary handle, a protective baffle and an oiling port. It suits thin branches and light pruning in a home garden. Fill the oiling port before every session and use the handle, because the drill's torque twists the adapter as it cuts. Our drill attachments guide covers which drills suit it.

When to buy a real chainsaw instead

Grinder kits make sense when you prune a few trees in winter or cut the odd log for the angeethi. Buy a dedicated chainsaw if:

  • you prune orchards or farm trees every season,
  • you cut firewood regularly,
  • you work away from a power socket, or
  • you want a safety lock trigger and automatic chain oiling built in.

The Sared 21V Cordless 10-Inch Chainsaw has a brushless motor, an automatic oil pump, tool-free chain tensioning, a wrap-around front handle and a safety lock trigger, as listed. Our chainsaw price guide compares it with these kits in detail.

For planks and boards, none of these are the right tool. A 7-inch circular saw cuts straight and clean; see the circular saw price guide.
