Step 1: Prepare and Mask

Step 2: Mix and Thin the Paint

Stir thoroughly. Paint settles in the tin. For a tin or two, a clean stick is enough. Thin only as the paint maker says. Follow the thinning instructions on the tin or the maker's data sheet. Water-based paints are usually thinned with water; oil-based enamels need the thinner the maker specifies. Add it a little at a time and stir well.

Use the viscosity funnel. Fill the funnel from the paint, time how many seconds it takes to empty, and compare with the guidance in the sprayer's manual for your type of paint. Thin in small steps until it matches, and write down what worked so the next batch is the same.

Strain before filling. Pour the paint through a fine mesh or clean cloth into the container. Lumps and skin are what block a 2.5mm nozzle.

Step 3: Spray Technique

1. Test on cardboard first. Adjust the flow and pattern until you get an even, wet coat without runs.
2. Set the pattern across your stroke. Use a vertical fan for side-to-side strokes and a horizontal fan for up-and-down strokes. Use the circular pattern for corners, edges and small parts.
3. Hold the gun square to the surface at a steady distance. Find the right distance on your test card: too close gives runs, too far gives a dry, rough finish.
4. Move your arm, not your wrist. Swinging the wrist puts more paint in the middle of each pass than at the ends.
5. Start moving before you pull the trigger and release it before you stop, so you don't leave blobs at the ends of each pass.
6. Overlap each pass by about half for even coverage.
7. Two thin coats beat one thick coat. Let the first coat dry as the tin directs before the second.
8. Refill before it runs dry. When the gun starts to spit, the container is low or the paint is too thick.

Safety: keep the room ventilated, and wear a mask and safety glasses. Solvent-based paints give off flammable vapour, so keep them away from gas heaters, stoves and anything that sparks, and turn off gas heaters in the room. That matters in winter, when gas heaters are common.

Step 4: Cleaning After Use

Clean the sprayer the same day. Paint left to dry in the nozzle blocks it, and it is much harder to clear later.

1. Unplug before taking anything apart.
2. Pour leftover paint back into its tin.
3. Rinse the container with clean water for water-based paint, or with the thinner the paint maker specifies for oil-based paint, in a ventilated place.
4. Spray clean water or thinner through the gun into a bucket until it comes out clear.
5. Take off the nozzle, clear the hole with the cleaning needle and scrub the parts with the cleaning brush, both supplied.
6. Wipe the body with a damp cloth. Never put the motor housing in water.
7. Dry and reassemble before storing.

Wash the mixer paddle straight away too. Paint, plaster and adhesive that dry on a paddle are hard to remove.
